Scenario planning

The environment of organisations is constantly changing and this comes with threats and opportunities. Scenario planning is a powerful tool that can shed light on change, and manage this change. An organisation that thinks about its possible futures is better equipped to advance future changes in a flexible way. It also enhances the organisation’ perception skills so that changes are more easily recognised and action can be swift and efficient.

No one can predict the future, but future events are rooted in the past and present. Because the past, present and future are related in this way, some portion of future events are predictable. Scenario planning makes discussions about the future less difficult as it turns the future into neutral territory without value judgements. This reduces difficult discussions, because right or wrong do not exist. Scenarios help people to distance themselves from the present and fully indulge in the future.

The BeBright approach to scenario planning

BeBright has developed a scenario planning methodology that fits well within the BeBright Phases model of Scanning, Designing and Realising the future, because it is based on outside-in thinking. BeBright starts with trend analysis and Scenario analysis to scan the future. Designing the future uses the Scenario analysis as a creative device to brainstorm for business cases options. The scenario planning enables organizations to more effectively make decisions and implement new concepts geared towards the future.
